Turn Back, the band's third studio album, was an ode to the classic sextet format, and a more consistent, stronger effort that had a more grittier edge. The more edgier sound of Turn Back reflected the growth of the band. Bobby Kimball's growing ability to play was evident in the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. Keyboardist David Paich's work was more precise, sharper, and less derivative than on previous performances.

After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live concert in Amsterdam that was released as a two-CD set called Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released a brand new studio album a few months after and embarked on a world tour to promote it. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began exploring old tapes and demos to discover songs that had never been recorded before. The album was released in 2001 as a duo album titled Then & Now.
