Which Lightweight Double Pushchair Should You Buy?

It's easy to move around in a lightweight double pushchair, particularly if you have children of varying age groups. They're generally easy to fold, steer and carry up and down the stairs.

The majority of the lightweight double pushchairs we tried were side-by-side models. These are the best for children who can sit up without assistance, since they aren't as likely to have car seat compatibility. However there are some exceptions. Thule Urban Glide 2 Double and Baby Trend Sit 'N Stand Double are both top choices that have adjustable recline in both seats, a large canopy, and padded 5-point harnesses. These are also easy to move around despite their bigger footprint. They are ideal for parents who fret about fitting through doors.

Side-by-side lightweight double pushchairs aren't foolproof however -- if your children are the same age or stage, they may still fight over who rides in which seat. If they're at different heights then a tandem style may be ideal for them as it allows them to face eachother.

Tandem

While side-by-side models may be more appropriate for siblings with similar ages, tandem lightweight double pushchairs are a different kind of pushchair with their own appeal. They can accommodate a larger car seat, and some even have reversible seats or an extra carrycot that is located in the middle. They are bigger and easy to get into and out of. However their baskets tend to be smaller than those on single buggies. They often have larger canopy as well as peekaboo windows, and even padded leg cushions.

The iCandy Peach tandem is another great example of a lightweight tandem that is a great value. Its fabrics feel a little less premium than some of our other top-rated doubles, but it still looks and feels great and is very easy to use. One of the most impressive things about it is its single-handed fold. Although it will require some practice, Kirstie in our Lab said it's "genius". The carrycot can't be folded while it is attached. However, the mechanism to attach and remove the carrycot is quick and easy.

Tandem lightweight double pushchairs will generally make more precise turns than side-byside models, but they can be more difficult to drive over uneven surfaces and curbs. They can also be slightly slower to speed up and may be heavier to move, which can result in stress on your back.

Another option is a convertible double buggy, which starts off as an individual and then you can add adapters that turn it into a double. It can also include a second seat, carrycot or both in front. Or the children can be seated together. Some of them also offer the option of incorporating buggy boards that can help older children keep up with a younger sibling.

Convertible

Convertible double pushchairs are great because they can be adjusted to the changing needs of the family. Parents also loved that it accommodates infant carriers and car seat from various brands. This includes a few that aren't typically compatible with other double buggies.
