Titration

A comprehensive assessment of your ADHD symptoms will be carried out by an experienced consultant Psychiatrist. This includes medical history and an assessment using the typical ADHD rating scales and questionnaires.

After your examination, you will be informed if medication is considered to be beneficial in your case. This will be discussed at your follow-up appointment (which may be scheduled in person, via video link or by phone). Your clinician will explain the different options available for you to take medication and, if you decide to start on medication we will suggest titrating the dose to optimise the balance of benefits and side effects for you.

This process could take a few weeks, and involves adjusting the dosage of your child's medication gradually until the proper balance is reached. It's not uncommon to to adjust up to three different medicines before you find the one that best fits your child's ADHD. It is essential for parents to take part in this process of titration adhd adults and keep a close watchful eye on their child's behavior to let the doctor know whether the medication is working or causing adverse effects.

If you decide to go back to NHS treatment you will receive an individual prescription for your medication. You will have to pay for your prescription at the pharmacy. This is not included in the consultation fee. You will be required to attend every six months to check your medication. This includes pulse and blood pressure readings. Annual reviews are also required.

Follow-up appointments

After the assessment is completed you will be able to book follow up appointments with the psychiatrist, as appropriate. Typically, the appointment will take place through a video call using zoom but in certain circumstances it may be possible to do an audio-only consultation (again at an extra cost).

At this point, we will discuss any treatment options and decide on a custom-made ADHD medication titration strategy. This will include a review and discussion of your medication dosage and any adverse effects you may be experiencing. The cost for these titration sessions is PS150 for face to face sessions and PS60 for online or telephone video consultations. Medication costs are additional and are paid directly to the pharmacy.

The psychiatrist will ask questions regarding your family history and the impact of your ADHD symptoms on your life, and any relationship problems or mental health issues that you may be experiencing. This is because ADHD can be a genetic condition and it is crucial to examine any family history that might indicate that you're at risk of developing the disorder.

During this examination, it is essential to be truthful and honest with your doctor who will use the information you provide to determine if you are able to meet the diagnostic criteria for ADHD. This is an important step because the wrong diagnosis can lead to inappropriate medication prescription.

If you've decided that you'd like to receive treatment for your ADHD, we will then schedule a follow-up appointment with one of our psychiatrists that specialize in this area. If you'd like to start treatment immediately, you can do this immediately following the diagnosis. You can also take for two weeks before considering the implications of the diagnosis and what options you have.

We suggest that if you are unsure about your preferences, talk to your GP prior to booking your private examination. Certain providers have different guidelines regarding whether they require the submission of a GP letter. Make sure that your GP accepts a Shared Care Agreement, which means you will be referred to them when you leave the clinic to get a prescription medication.

Medication

Medication is an integral part of the journey for many who are looking for an official ADHD diagnosis. It isn't always easy to obtain a prescription from a psychiatrist on the NHS. NHS waiting lists are notoriously long and GPs are often reluctant to refer patients to specialist services.

Inquiring your GP to refer through Right to Choose is one way to avoid this (see psychiatry - UK and ADHD 360). You can select a provider who offers a private assessment service and titration adhd medication. This can reduce your wait time by a significant amount and is more convenient if you are working and have a busy schedule.

After you have been diagnosed, your doctor will examine you to determine if you need medication adjustment. You'll have to fill out forms that differ by provider but the most frequent ones are self-reporting questionnaires and medical histories going to your childhood and into adulthood. These will help your clinician determine any issues that could mean you shouldn't take ADHD medications if they're prescribed.

If you are being titrated, the medication will consist of stimulants and nonstimulant medicines. These will be carefully trialled and monitored to find the best combination for you, taking into account any medical conditions you may have. The titration procedure can be long and may require a number of additional appointments before you are stable.

The frequency of your follow-up appointments will be contingent on the type and amount of medication you're taking. They can be scheduled for monthly or quarterly. Your physician will make sure whether you are safe with the medication, record any adverse reactions you've experienced, and make any needed adjustments to ensure that you remain on a safe dose. You will be required to go to an annual health check-up and routine health examination which includes pulse, blood pressure, and weight measurements.

For some people it could be that they are happy with their medication and don't require any further discussion on their titration. If, however, they do need further discussions about their titration adhd meds and treatment plan it's possible that they will be referred back to the same private clinic that conducted their initial assessment. In this scenario, the titration adhd medication will be included in the consultation fee. The medication will then be given via the private prescription. This may cost more than a prescription from the NHS since the pharmacy will charge for the medication.
